As I’m sure most of you can tell, I’m a pretty huge sports fan that loves to be up to date on all news. Since I write for a sporting news website, its important for me to know exactly what is going down in sports. And lately, especially during this specific week, when the NBA trade deadline, baseball season, the NCAA tournament and the NFL Free Agency kicking off, I have been turning more to twitter get my news for sports more than ever.
I wasn’t really a huge twitter addict until I started this class, and now I am starting to get more into. Not really as the kind of guy to spout my own opinions out there but to find out news fast. When I am on twitter, I have a faster chance of finding out what is going on before others, thus giving me a shot to write articles before others even know that news has come out.
More and more, journalists have been turning to twitter to break news. The top sporting journalists in the world, are making sure that they are the first to post exactly what is going on with the teams they follow before the other journalists do. Its quite crazy in all honesty to follow. For example, last Friday night (9th of March), I heard that the New York Jets (favorite team) would be having a press conference over the phone with members of the media for about 10:15pm. Since I am obviously not a member of the media, I relied on NY journalists to break the news. Sure enough, by 10:17, journalists were “tweeting” that the Jets had given their QB a contract extension, adding more years to his deal in order to keep him on the team for a longer period of time. It was fantastic to watch all these journalists all tweet the exact same thing at around the exact same time, trying to be the first to break the news.
And over the course of the past week, with news regarding NFL Free agency and players changing teams, these analysts have been tweeting their information. They’ve been doing it all offseason before writing their articles, ensuring that the followers on twitter that they have are guaranteed to hear the news from them first.
As I will obviously get into further since most of my PLN is revolving around how journalists are using social media, this past week will likely be a major part of my news. The thing is, breaking news isn’t the only reason to follow these analysts and journalists on twitter. These journalists are also telling me the score of the games I don’t get to watch on TV. Obviously, with March Madness going on, not all games are going to be broadcasted on television. For the games that aren’t, I simply follow a few college basketball analysts and get all the news I want. Its a fantastic thing for me to do, and its extremely easy for me to get my updates.
Twitter has really changed the sporting world and its something that has really been helpful for me this past week!
