You Eastern Michigan students can’t seriously tell me you didn’t know what you were getting into when you decided that you were going to be an official member of the Eagle community, or lack thereof.
Yes, Eastern isn’t your typical university that has over 20,000 students. While schools with less of a population are filled with a party atmosphere and school pride that soars through the roof during sporting events, Eastern just isn’t that kind of a school.
Simply put, EMU is a commuter school. The officials may want to tell you otherwise but that’s what it is. A day at Eastern for me personally consists of driving to class, walking to class, walking back to my car and then driving off campus, with talking to fellow students or professors as an option.
I’m not alone in doing that. I can’t be the only one can I?
But it’s not that big of an issue. People who applied to Eastern and did the simplest research could have seen that Eastern is not a party school or a school where there is a close knit community attachment to the university.
Eastern Michigan serves the true purpose of what a school is for; education. Students come to Eastern, get their work done and are on their way in most cases. For a lot of students, there isn’t much to stay for. They have lives off or on campus that doesn’t involve full dedication to school work or being part of the community.
But students stop whining about how much they dislike Eastern because of the fact that they should have known beforehand what they were getting into. It’s also because financially, Eastern is the place to be.
Earning a degree at the price Eastern students can is a fantastic opportunity. We as students save money attending Eastern, more so than the other high level schools in Michigan. I for example paid less for an entire year of classes than my friend at the University of Michigan paid for a single semester. Isn’t that an amazing opportunity, considering he doesn’t even know what his major is yet as a sophomore meanwhile I am three classes away from completing my journalism major requirements at the same age?
Eastern students need to realize that the reason why we need to come to college nowadays is for an education so we can better our lives for the future with a high paying job. The fun is just extra so if you are missing out on the college life, deal with it. When it comes down to it, the more money you still have in your pockets after college, the less of a problem you will have down the line. Eastern helps students with that.
If you want to go party every weekend, downtown Ann Arbor is just about a 15 minute drive down Washtenaw and you can experience that. But for schooling, Eastern’s smaller community is a fine place to get your degree.
