When walking into the dimly lit version of J Alexander’s contemporary restaurant in Somerset Mall in Troy, MI, the aroma of food coming fresh off the grill and into the hands of patrons is enough to rush hungry customers into a booth.
As you await seating in a crowded restaurant, you are welcomed to the restaurant by the pleasant staff, well informed on the waiting time before one can indulge themselves in the food.
The time spent in the slightly crowded waiting room is only a short 15 minutes without a reservation in hand. After being ushered to our seats by the friendly staff, the bold font menus are placed down and forecast the prices for the night.
As an appetizing salad comes out, it’s easy to wonder just how anyone can finish the whole thing and manage to have room for more. A full bowl of salad, filled with cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce and your usual dressings on the side, are topped off with chicken strips on top adding a fantastic touch to the taste buds. It’s a magnificent start to a great meal.
The costs for the meals aren’t a cheap tag at first glance, with a New York steak well done costing over 25 dollars. But once they are brought to the actual table, a hungry patron can see just how well it is worth it, in both quantity and quality of the meal.
The steak was, for lack of a better term, huge, thick and tall and cooked exactly as requested. Filled with every juicy bite is the perfect seasoning to complete one of the better steaks I have had out in years.
But while the steak was fantastic, the best part and the biggest personal surprise was the Mac and Cheese. When recommended by the charismatic waiter as “not your usual mac and cheese,” and “one of the best items on the menu,” I couldn’t believe it. With the disbelief, I felt the need to put my faith in the hands of the waiter and ordered a meal that I usually only eat in days of extreme laziness.
I didn’t regret it.
The waiter’s recommendation wasn’t an exaggeration. If anything, it was a an understatement. The deliciousness of the mac and cheese was undeniable, filled with cheese and having a small amount of spiciness, adding flavor to the dish. Similar to the rest of the dishes I had purchased, the amount of food provide is well worth the cost and can be bought without any regret the next day.
Overall, this location of J Alexander’s should be visited by anyone in the area or visiting the Somerset mall for a day of shopping. The waiting staff was fantastic and extremely helpful in decision making, while the food was top of the line and well worth the price.
